New Jersey Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide (CHHA) Classroom Instruction on the Relias Platform

A guide to using Relias for the classroom instruction portion of the Homemaker-Home Health Aide certification requirements.

A Flexible, Convenient Way to Deliver CHHA Classroom Instruction

A critical requirement of the New Jersey Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide (CHHA) program is the completion of 76 hours of training:

Classroom instruction 60 hours
In-person clinical instruction in a skills laboratory or patient care setting 16 hours
TOTAL 76 HOURS

The Relias Platform gives your Home Health Aides the flexibility they need to take the CHHA courses at their own pace, whenever and wherever they’re able to fit them into their schedule. All they need is an internet-connected computer, smartphone, or tablet.

The purpose of this guide is to help you, the Program Coordinator, navigate the requirements related to using Relias as your training vendor for the classroom instruction portion of the New Jersey CHHA program.

Steps to Success

1. Complete the Training Program Approval Requirements

2. Provide an electronic copy of your official approval letters to Relias and purchase the New Jersey CHHA curriculum

  • The New Jersey Board of Nursing will provide you with two official letters upon approval of your CHHA training program: one letter approving the dates for your CHHA training program, and a separate letter approving your Program Coordinator/Program Instructor application
  • Provide an electronic copy of each of these two approval letters to your Relias representative
  • Purchase the New Jersey CHHA curriculum from Relias

3. Have your Home Health Aides complete the online coursework on the Relias Platform

  • Self-paced
  • Complete from any internet-connected computer, tablet, or smartphone

4. Have your Home Health Aides complete the in-person clinical instruction

  • In-person, clinical instruction in a skills laboratory or patient care setting: 16 hours
  • Must be supervised by an approved instructor or Program Coordinator

5. Submit your Graduate List and letters of completion to the New Jersey Board of Nursing

  • Once your Home Health Aides successfully complete the Relias training, the in-person clinical instruction, and the proctored exam, submit a completed Graduate List form to the New Jersey Board of Nursing
  • Submit a letter of completion for each Home Health Aide as instructed in the Training Program “Completion/Submission” Requirements section of the Training Program and Instructor Personnel Record Form Information PDF
  • Along with each Home Health Aide’s letter of completion, you must include an electronic copy (PDF) of their Relias completion certificate to show successful completion of the classroom instruction curriculum

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If my organization uses Relias for the New Jersey CHHA classroom instruction, do we still need to have an in-person/on-site instructor?

Yes. The New Jersey CHHA Training Program contains two components: classroom instruction and in-person, clinical instruction in a skills laboratory or patient care setting. The classroom instruction requirement is met using the Relias online curriculum; however, the clinical instruction must be performed in person by your Program Coordinator or an approved instructor.

  • Who is responsible for proctoring the final exam (after all online content is completed)?

Each learner must successfully pass a final exam. The final exam must be proctored by an approved instructor or the Program Coordinator.

  • How do organizations gain access to the Relias New Jersey CHHA curriculum?

Prior to Relias sharing the curriculum with your organization, you must provide your Relias representative with an electronic copy of two official approval letters from the New Jersey Board of Nursing:

    • The letter approving the dates for your CHHA training program

    • The letter approving your Program Coordinator/Program Instructor application

  • What information must organizations submit to the New Jersey Board of Nursing if they use Relias’s online training?

When applying for CHHA training program approval, enter “Relias” in the “Name of instructor and credentials” column on the Application for Homemaker-Home Health Aide Training Faculty form for everything except “VI. Clinical/Laboratory Hours.”

When submitting each Home Health Aide’s letter of completion, include an electronic copy (PDF) of their Relias completion certificate to show successful completion of the classroom instruction curriculum.

  • In addition to Relias’s online curriculum, what training must still be in person?

Completion of Relias’s online training, combined with an in-person proctored final exam and 16 hours of on-site, in-person skills training from an approved instructor, will give your Home Health Aides the 76 hours required for New Jersey CHHA training, as outlined in the “Curriculum Comparison” section above.

  • If I have a certified nurse aide who wants to become a CHHA, what courses must they take from the Relias classroom instruction curriculum?

If you have a nurse aide with an active certification from the New Jersey Board of Nursing who wishes to become a CHHA, they must complete the Home Care Module portion of the Relias classroom instruction curriculum. Please see the Training Program and Instructor Personnel Record Form Information PDF for additional requirements.

  • If I use the Relias curriculum, do I need additional equipment?

The Relias Platform is an online learning system, so learners will need an internet-capable computer, tablet, or smartphone to access the curriculum. Beyond that, no additional equipment is required compared to the traditional paper-based, in-person curriculum.
